Police investigate death of 19-year-old college student

Onondaga Community College student found dead on campus

Searchers discovered the body of Onondaga Community College freshman Alex Hendry, 19, around 1 a.m. near the college's baseball and softball fields, according to the school.

"We must put our best face forward right now in this very hard time ..." Every one of those 40 athletes that I have on my baseball team is an extension of my family. Those are all my sons.

Hendry was reported missing Sunday evening by his roommate after Hendry went to an off-campus party Saturday night and never returned.

The general studies major, who was originally from Rochester, New York, was on the college's baseball team and was also a talented basketball player.

But Alex Hendry's life was cut short this weekend after he collapsed near the baseball fields after leaving a party in temperatures that bottomed out at -16 to -23 degrees.

"The thoughts and prayers of our entire campus community are with Hendry's family and friends", the college said in a statement, adding it was "deeply saddened" to confirm the student's death.

"A photo of Hendry can be found at the College's Athletics website".

"Everybody liked him and if they didn't like him, he didn't give a hoot", Hendry said. "He was his own man".

Just a few miles from where Hendry was found dead Sunday, a Syracuse University student was found dead inside a campus residence hall just a day and a half earlier.

"It's obviously the worst thing you want, losing someone so young", said Michael Giruzzi, athletic director at Hilton. "When you're a pitcher and he was a pitcher on our team and you have that long flowing hair you're going to stand out". "He'd say hello and was well-liked by all kids".
