Titans of Mavericks surf contest takes place Friday

Surfer Nic Lamb's whirlwind after Titans of Mavericks win

Lamb of nearby Santa Cruz, California outlasted 23 other competitors to win the 10th organized contest at the legendary Mavericks surf break near Half Moon Bay, about 20 miles south of San Francisco. The contest was cancelled in 2015 due to a lack of waves. A year ago the call was never made to run the contest because the waves never got big enough. When the swell hits the reef, the wave jumps up and crashes back down violently, then washes through craggy rocks. "It's always gnarly and risky". It was last held in 2014.

Several bars and restaurants in Half Moon Bay are hosting viewing parties throughout the day. Crowds around the harbor and village were minimal unlike previous years as the beach and cliffs above Mavericks were closed to the public.

Ken Collins, left, and Chris Bertish surf a giant wave during the invitation-only event. I could feel water going inside my head. Announcers from the Red Bull broadcast say he blew out his eardrum in a wipe out in round one and almost drowned. This is the scariest thing I’ve ever done.

Surfers received the call Tuesday, when many had gathered in Hawaii to participate in another renowned surfing contest.

The competition is held when the surf is expected to be huge, between November 1 and March 31.

The allure of Mavericks can not be understated. In 2010, 13 people who got too close to the water were injured and at least 40 people were knocked off their feet by a monster wave.

Spectators now have to watch online. Event organizers were told by the California Coastal Commission to make preparations to include women if they want a permit to hold the event next year, the AP reports.

Hawaiian big-wave star Shane Dorian withdrew before the start allowing alternate Travis Payne of Pacifica to compete.
