Fans left flowers and candles outside of David Bowie's residence in NYC early Monday morning, hours after the legendary rock singer's spokesman confirmed that he had died at the age of 69.  His new, seven-song album Blackstar was lauded by critics prior to his death, and according to long-time friend and producer Tony Visconte, it was intended as Bowie's "parting gift" to the world.

"He always did what he wanted to do", Visconti wrote on Facebook early Monday. "I will never forget him".

His albums included "Let's Dance", "Space Oddity", "Young Americans" and "Diamond Dogs", with his big breakthrough coming in 1972 with "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars". Throughout the years, his fashion sense morphed and evolved time and time again, always with an eye to the theatrical.

British Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted his condolences: "I grew up listening to and watching the pop genius David Bowie".
